What does an IQ test actually measure?

IQ (Intelligence Quotient) tests measure a range of cognitive abilities — pattern recognition, logical reasoning, spatial thinking, numerical reasoning, and verbal comprehension. The 'quotient' originally referred to mental age divided by chronological age, but modern IQ scoring uses a standardised scale where 100 is the population average.

Standard IQ tests like the Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale (WAIS) and the Stanford-Binet are administered by psychologists and take several hours. They measure multiple distinct cognitive domains and produce both a full-scale IQ and subscale scores. Online IQ tests, including this one, are shorter approximations that primarily measure pattern recognition and logical reasoning.

IQ is widely studied and has predictive validity for academic outcomes, certain career paths, and performance on complex tasks. But intelligence is multidimensional. A single number doesn't capture creativity, emotional intelligence, practical problem-solving, or domain-specific expertise — all of which matter in real-world performance.

How pattern-based IQ tests work

Pattern recognition tests measure your ability to identify relationships between abstract shapes and sequences. This taps into 'fluid intelligence' — the capacity to reason about new problems without relying on prior knowledge. It's one of the core components of general cognitive ability.

Raven's Progressive Matrices, a well-researched pattern recognition test, has been shown to correlate strongly with full-scale IQ scores. Our test uses similar matrix and sequence-based problems to give a reasonable estimate of fluid reasoning.

Speed matters less than accuracy on this test. Take your time with each question. If you're genuinely stuck, your best reasoning is more accurate than a fast guess.

What your score means

IQ scores follow a bell curve. About 68% of the population score between 85 and 115. Around 95% score between 70 and 130. Scores above 130 are in the 'superior' to 'very superior' range; scores below 70 may indicate intellectual disability and require clinical assessment.

Online IQ tests are less accurate than formal assessments because they can't control for test-taking conditions, fatigue, distractions, or prior familiarity with similar problems. Our test gives a reasonable estimate — treat it as a data point, not a definitive measure.

IQ is not fixed. Working memory, processing speed, and fluid reasoning all respond to training, sleep quality, and cognitive load. A test taken while tired or distracted will underestimate your actual ability.

How to Interpret Your Results

Score RangeCategoryWhat it means
0–5Below Average (70-85)Your estimated IQ range is 70-85. Many of these questions involve lateral thinking and trick questions. Don't worry — IQ tests only measure certain types of intelligence.
6–10Average (85-100)Your estimated IQ range is 85-100, which is within the average range. You demonstrated solid foundational reasoning skills.
11–15Above Average (100-115)Your estimated IQ range is 100-115, placing you above average. You show strong logical reasoning and pattern recognition abilities.
16–18Superior (115-130)Your estimated IQ range is 115-130, indicating superior cognitive abilities. You excel at logical reasoning, pattern recognition, and critical thinking.
19–20Exceptional (130+)Your estimated IQ range is 130+, placing you in the top 2% of the population. You demonstrate exceptional reasoning and problem-solving abilities.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is this a real IQ test?

It's a validated pattern-reasoning test that correlates with fluid intelligence. It's not equivalent to a psychologist-administered WAIS or Stanford-Binet, but it's not a random quiz either. Treat the result as a reasonable estimate.

What's a normal IQ score?

100 is the population average. Scores between 90 and 110 are considered average. Above 120 is above average; above 130 is in the top 2% of the population.

Can I improve my IQ?

Fluid intelligence responds modestly to training. Regular cognitive challenge, adequate sleep, cardiovascular exercise, and learning new skills all have documented positive effects on cognitive performance.

Why did I score differently to last time?

IQ test scores vary with state — tiredness, stress, distractions, and familiarity with the question types all affect results. A 5-10 point variation is normal. For a stable estimate, take the test when well-rested and focused.
