Strands hides words inside a letter grid. Trace adjacent letters in any direction to spell them out. Every puzzle has a hidden theme. One special word — the Spangram — spans the whole board and reveals what the theme is.
Strands is a visual search task. You scan a grid for meaningful patterns. This tests your focus and attention. Visual search slows down early in ADHD and in some types of cognitive decline, so practising it keeps those skills sharp.
The theme element adds another layer. Once you know the theme, your brain uses that knowledge to guide your search. This is top-down thinking — using what you know to steer what you look for. It's a powerful mental skill.
Tracing words in any direction also trains spatial reasoning. You rotate and flip letter paths in your head. This skill links to the part of the brain that handles navigation and spatial memory.
The Spangram touches two opposite edges of the grid. It's usually a longer word or a two-word phrase. When you find it, the puzzle's theme is revealed. After that, finding the remaining theme words gets much easier.
Many players hunt for the Spangram first. Because it must touch two edges, you can narrow your search to letters near the border. This logical constraint makes it easier to find than it first seems.
Read the theme title before you start. Even a vague hint primes your brain to think of related words. Your mind starts scanning for them before you've consciously decided to.
Non-theme words still help. They fill your Hint meter. A hint can reveal where one of the theme words is hiding — useful when you're stuck.
Start from the edges. Border letters have fewer tracing directions than centre letters. This makes it easier to check all possible words starting from there.
