Mental Rotation

Two shapes appear. The right one is rotated. Decide if it is the same object or a mirror. Same means you can turn it in your head to match. Mirror means no turn will match. Score is correct minus wrong in the time box.

Pick a length

Short is a quick check. Long is the full run. Your best for each is stored on this device.

What this measures

Mental rotation is a spatial working-memory task. You hold one shape, turn it, and compare. Time grows with the angle for most people, which is the classic Shepard finding. Mirrors take longer because the turn never lands. Designers, surgeons, and players of map-heavy games often score higher. We mix angles and mirrors so you cannot guess from difficulty alone. Short samples the skill. Long exposes sloppy late guesses. Tracking one landmark is faster than spinning the whole object.

Where this shows up in real life

Reading a map that is not north-up, packing a boot, or turning a part drawing uses the same mental turn. Landmark tracking is the practical strategy.

How to improve

  • Pick one landmark on the shape (a hook, a gap) and track only that as you turn.
  • If a turn of 180 still fails, it is probably a mirror. Do not keep spinning.
  • Guessing late hurts more than skipping a beat. Wrong taps subtract.
  • Sit square. Tilting your head is a legal strategy. Use it.

Frequently asked questions

What is a good mental rotation score?

Mid-teens is typical. Mid-20s means you still decide cleanly at steep angles and on mirrors.

Does this measure IQ?

It measures one spatial piece that shows up on some IQ batteries. It is not a full IQ score.

Can I improve?

Yes. The strategy of tracking one landmark transfers. Daily five-minute runs move the score within a couple of weeks. Sit square to the screen so the turn is in your head, not in your neck.
