Symbol Match
A key maps symbols to digits. Rows of symbols appear. Type the matching digits as fast as you can. The key stays visible. This is a coding-speed task, not a memory trick. Short is 30 seconds. Long is 60.

A key maps symbols to digits. Type the digit for each symbol as they appear. The key stays visible.
Pick a length
Short is a quick check. Long is the full run. Your best for each is stored on this device.
What this measures
Digit-symbol and symbol search cousins sit on many processing-speed batteries. You keep the rule in sight and still pay a lookup cost on every item. As the mapping becomes automatic, the lookup shrinks and raw speed shows. That is why the second half of a long run is usually faster than the first. The score is correct matches. Wrong digits do not add. The test rewards a stable scan path more than clever memory. Keep the key in peripheral vision and do not re-read every pair.
Where this shows up in real life
Coding from a visible key is every form, till, and lab sheet that maps a mark to a number. Rhythm plus lookup beats memorising the key first.
How to improve
- Keep your eyes on a triangle: key, current symbol, input. Do not wander the page.
- Type with your dominant hand and tap Next or Enter without looking down.
- If you lose the place, skip the symbol rather than inventing a digit.
- The key does not move. Trust it. Rechecking the whole key every item is the slow path.
Frequently asked questions
What is a good symbol match score?
Around 18 correct in a minute is typical. High 20s means the mapping became automatic mid-run.
Should I memorise the key?
A few pairs will stick. Do not pause to memorise the rest. Lookup plus rhythm beats a half-learned key.
Is this an IQ subtest?
It is the same family as coding subtests on some batteries. This page is a practice drill with its own timing, not a scaled IQ index.
