What this measures
Sequence memory measures serial recall in visuospatial working memory: your ability to store not just which locations lit up, but the exact order. It is a close cousin of the Corsi block-tapping task used in neuropsychology since the 1970s. Order information is fragile — most errors are transpositions, where you remember the right squares in the wrong sequence — which is why this test feels harder than remembering positions alone.
Where this shows up in real life
Following a multi-step recipe, a dance routine, or a set of directions uses the same ordered spatial memory. Strong sequence recall helps when you must hold a plan and execute it without rewriting notes every few seconds.

How to improve
- Chunk the sequence into groups of 2–3 moves and rehearse each chunk as a mini-pattern.
- Trace the path with your eyes during playback — spatial rehearsal beats trying to verbalise positions.
- Turn the sequence into a shape or gesture; motion patterns are easier to store than isolated squares.
- Replay the whole sequence mentally once before you start clicking, not while you click.
- Stay calm at high levels. Working memory capacity drops sharply under stress.
Frequently asked questions
What is a good sequence memory score?
Most people reach level 6–8 before their first error. Level 10 or higher is well above average, and level 14+ generally requires a trained chunking strategy rather than raw memory.
How is this different from the visual memory test?
The visual memory test asks which tiles were shown; sequence memory also demands the order. Adding order roughly halves the number of items people can hold, because each item must be bound to its position in the series.
Can sequence memory be trained?
Scores on the task itself improve substantially with practice as you develop chunking strategies. The underlying working-memory capacity is harder to move, but strategy gains are real and durable.
