What this measures
The visual memory test measures visuospatial short-term memory capacity: how much of a briefly seen spatial pattern you can retain and reproduce. Unlike sequence memory there is no order component — it is a single simultaneous snapshot, closer to iconic memory feeding visual working memory. Capacity is usually estimated at three to four simple objects, but patterns allow chunking: symmetric or familiar shapes compress into fewer slots, which is exactly the skill this test rewards.
Where this shows up in real life
Remembering where you parked, what a diagram looked like, or which icons changed on a dashboard is visuospatial snapshot memory. Designers, chess players, and navigators lean on it constantly.

How to improve
- Look for shapes — lines, corners, letters. A pattern seen as 'an L plus a dot' is two chunks, not six tiles.
- Fixate the centre of the grid; trying to scan tiles during a brief flash loses the edges.
- Use symmetry. If the pattern is nearly symmetric, store the rule plus the exception.
- Click your most certain tiles first, then reconstruct the rest from the shape you stored.
Frequently asked questions
What is a good visual memory score?
Most runs end around level 7–9. Level 11 and beyond is well above average and usually means you are chunking patterns into shapes rather than memorising individual tiles.
Is photographic memory real?
True eidetic memory is essentially undocumented in adults. People with extraordinary visual recall use structure and meaning — the same chunking this test rewards — rather than storing a literal image.
Why do I lose the pattern the instant I look away?
The raw visual trace (iconic memory) lasts well under a second. Whatever you did not transfer into working memory during the flash is gone — which is why an encoding strategy matters more than 'looking harder'.
